“I have to earn the trust of the coach”: Flames captain meets Peters

A number of Calgary Flames players were on hand Monday to meet new head coach Bill Peters at the Saddledome.

“I’ve heard great things from guys who have played under him,” captain Mark Giordano explained to Sportsnet 960 The Fan. “I feel he’s going to be a real structured coach and you get that excitement. As a player, it doesn’t matter who you are, you have to come in and prove yourself as a good player to earn that trust and respect.

“You’d like to build a great relationship with the coach. As the captain, that’s important. You have to be the guy who relays the message to the group sometimes. I need to earn the trust and respect of the coach.”

Peters replaces Glen Gulutzan, who the Flames fired last week.

Peters joins Calgary after spending the past four seasons as the head coach with the Carolina Hurricanes. He will be behind the bench for Canada next month at the 2018 IIHF World Championship.
