Air quality rated high risk as wildfire smoke drifts back over Calgary

A familiar campfire smell has returned to the air in Calgary.

After a break over the weekend, the wind has blown smoke from B.C. wildfires back over our city.

Another special air quality statement was issued Tuesday for the entire province of Alberta.

Environment Canada’s air quality index reached 10+ Wednesday, which is the highest rating.

Medical Officer of Health for the Calgary zone, Dr. Jason Cabaj, says hospitals and emergency rooms in Calgary are seeing a higher number of users than usual.

Cabaj’s number one suggestion is to stay out of the poor air, and in an air conditioned building, if possible.

Meteorologist Andrew Schultz from City’s Breakfast Television said it doesn’t look like things will change much until Saturday.

“Looks like we could have a smoky week ahead. (It) depends, once again, on that upper air pattern but today, it’s set up to really deliver enough to mix down and be a bit of a factor for us,” he said.

Schultz said the smoke has nowhere to go and is just hanging out in the high level of the atmosphere.

Environment Canada warns people may experience increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath, and those with lung or cardiovascular disease are most at risk.
