Police Chief Rick Hanson is defending actions taken by his officers around 3 a.m. Monday morning that ended with a man being shot.

Police say they fired at the driver after he tried to take off during a traffic stop..

Two constables pulled over a 21-year-old man driving a suspected stolen car.   When an officer approached the vehicle, the driver hit the gas pedal and, police say, it struck one of the officers.

That's when the officers fired about five shots at the vehicle.

Hanson is satisfied with how his officers handled the situation.   He says the suspect chose to take actions that put the police in jeopardy.

The driver is known to police.   He was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The seven-year member of the force that was hit by the car suffered minor injuries.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating.
